Which Of The Top 100 Internet Retailers Have A Customized Welcome Tab for Facebook?

February 23 2011 by ~ 0 Comments

Last week we looked at the top 100 Internet retailers’ home pages, company blogs and product pages to see which ones have Facebook/Twitter buttons and share options available. This week we look at which of the top 100 Internet retailers are using customized landing/welcome tabs on their Facebook pages.

Online retailers are using Facebook (and other social media platforms) to engage with their audiences, drive traffic to their websites and reach new customers. But to garner this active audience, companies should give the user an inventive to “like” their page first. The easiest and simplest way to do this a customized tab that acts as a landing page. These tabs can prompt the user to “like” the page, offer promotions, promote campaigns or give people access to exclusive content. These tabs help grab people’s attention and give them a reason to like the page.

Companies’ Facebook Pages

Over half  (56%) of the top 100 online retailers have a customized welcome tab for their Facebook page. Forty two percent use the default setting and directed users to their wall. Some of the 42 companies had excellent customized tabs that were not set as the tab people see when the first view the page – a missed opportunity to possibly gain more likes. There were two companies that didn’t have an official Facebook page.

Note: Many of the companies that we looked at have multiple Facebook pages. If at least one of the pages had a customized welcome tab, we tallied the company under “customized welcome tab.”

Some highlights of the customized landing pages:

Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart had a charitable angle by asking users to help them decide which area of the country to donate money to help fight hunger. The community with the most “likes” got the most relief.

OfficeMax

Office supplies are not normally a fun product, but OfficeMax did a great job trying to spice it up. The welcome tab promotes an initiative that lets people virtually draw (using a new office pen that they are promoting) on a self-portrait video uploaded by the users. The welcome tab also has “insider deals” and a silly quiz to find out “what office supply are you?” P.S. I’m Sharpie Retractable Permanent Makers.

Sears

The welcome tab for the Sears Facebook page promotes eGift cards, which you can send via email and Facebook. People can also share this promotion easily via social media.

Weight Watchers

Their welcome tab is part of a multi-touch marketing plan, because it displays a longer version of their TV commercial with their most recent spokeswoman, Jennifer Hudson.

Gap

Gap’s Facebook welcome tab gives the user an opaque view of their new clothes and forces you “like” the page to see the pictures fully.

Final Thought

When it comes to Facebook, having a customized welcome tab is a must because it allows the company to have more control over what the user sees first, makes the company stand out, and gives the user an incentive to “like” the company or product.
