What Content Should You Create? Part 4 of Smart Content Creation
June 01 2011 by Stephanie Ryska ~ 0 CommentsThis is the last part in a four-part series about content creation – the who, what, where and why of content creation. The first part was on why smart content creation is essential to online marketing, the second part covered the who of content creation, and the third was where your company’s content should live. Now let’s go over what kind of content you should create.
General Types of Content
Now that you understand the key parts of creating smart content it’s time to …just do it. You know why you should do it, who is doing and where the content is going. So, what types of content are you going to create? Here are three general types of content:
Informative Content
The Internet is the information highway, so give your customers the type of content that will help them obtain information on something they care about or solve a problem. For example, you could teach your customers how to use your products and give them tips on how to do so more effectively. You could also showcase reviews of products or give people an in-depth look at new products.
Newsworthy Content
This type of content focuses on recent news or information that people will want to know about and share with friends. For example, you could share links to news stories or issues that are related to your brand or products. Or you could give people information about events or other news in your industry.
Entertaining Content
This type of content is designed to entertain. Use humor; think of content that is unique or outside of the box. This is a great area to use different formats, such as pictures or videos, but you can also write entertaining blog posts. With entertaining content, you can experiment and push the envelope some.
A Few General Rules
Keep it short
Use lists, numbers, sections, and bold titles. Why? Because most people are not going to read every single word you write. They skim to the best or most relevant parts. For the people that do read every word, if your content is to long, they might lose interest.
Keywords and Titles
Make sure your titles have keywords that you would like to rank for or show up in searches. This is one way to get new people to see your content. Also, try to create titles that make people want to click on your Facebook posts and tweets.
Ask Questions
Any piece of content can lead to a conversation. Ask a question after blog posts, videos or on the last slide of presentations. Remember you are using smart content creation to connect with customers. Asking questions helps facilitate that.
