Thoughts from Media 2.0 Day – Digital Capital Week

June 15 2010 by ~ 2 Comments

There are a ton of great digital/mobile/social events taking place in DC this week as part of Digital Capital Week. This morning I was able to attend two sessions from Media 2.0 day. The panels were sponsored by USA Today, which is doing some very innovative stuff, such as their recently announced partnership with Gowalla for travel tips.

See below for a few notes/thoughts I had during these Media 2.0 sessions. Please excuse the fact that I didn’t always attribute quotes/thoughts to specific panelists–I was trying to pay attention and didn’t get every detail.

Social and Traditional Media Panel

We’re past the point of asking if news organizations should engage audiences through social media. Instead, we need to be asking how they can innovate and how to get real impact out of that innovation.

Companies need to understand the long-term implications of social media and how to create and transmit knowledge. – Robert Michael Murray – VP of Social Media for National Geographic

Andy Carvin – Senior Strategist for National Public Radio’s Social Media Desk – Technology platforms are catching up to their mission. One of their big pushes is letting people collaborate on projects.

Benet Wilson – Online Managing Editor for Aviation Week’s Business Aviation and Co-Chair of the National Association for Black Journalist’s Digital Journalism Task Force – More and more journalists are finding story ideas through social media tools and platforms.

Brian Dresher- Manager of Social Media and Digital Partnerships for USA TODAY – There has been a recent cultural shift for news organizations. You used to have to beg and plead journalists to participate in social media. Now, it’s a new way for journalists to interact with their audience, and it creates opportunities for new types of breaking news.

NPR has “citizen designers” and others who have gotten involved to collaborate on cool projects. Why do people participate? They see it as serious volunteering and want to help give back and help NPR keep the public informed.

News organizations are making the transformation from being publishing systems to platforms. The goal used to be to get content online. Now, the goal is to get people engaged and interact with them.

Think about what you’re trying to get out of these communities/what you’re trying to accomplish.  Just because you can do something, doesn’t always mean you should.

The State of Now – Jeff Pulver

Jeff is a brilliant guy who runs the #140 conferences, is a pioneer of the VoIP industy and helped cofound Vonage. Here are some thoughts/notes from his speech; unfortunately my laptop battery died so I didn’t make it through his entire presentation.

We’re living through a revolution.

Individual voices are starting to be listened to. Big corporations have listening departments.

Individual people are affecting change and have power. One person can amplify the voice of another.

Don’t get obsessed with the numbers (friends, followers, etc). It’s all about the people – it’s what you do with the attention you get.

If you want to be or create the new “it.” think about “now media moments.”
ex: Susan Boyle went from unknown to on Oprah in 8 days
ex: Sixth grader found on youtube gets recording contract on Ellen

Hope you found these notes useful. I’m looking forward to attending other DC Digital Capital Week events, including the 140 Conference here in DC later this week. Hope to see you there!
