The Where of Smart Content Creation
May 25 2011 by Stephanie Ryska ~ 0 CommentsThis is the third part in a four-part series about content creation – the who, what, where and why of content creation. The first part was on why smart content creation is essential to online marketing, and second part covered the who of content creation. Today, we wanted to talk about where your content should live.
Where Should Your Content Be Placed?
First you should think about the channels your audience currently utilizes. Find out where they’re talking about your products, services and industry. Then you have to factor in, as I explained in my last post, what resources you have. Plus take some time to do some research to find out what platforms other companies are using in your industry. If you company doesn’t use any social channels currently, the best thing to do is probably to start a company blog. Then think about other properties like Facebook, Twitter, Slideshare, etc. No matter what channels or properties you use, the MOST important thing to remember you have measure what is happening in those channels.
The Importance of a Company Blog
Companies that blog can see increased traffic, leads and awareness. A blog is probably your best bet for content because it can be your content hub. Most blogging platforms let you display many different types of content like text, video and pictures. Make sure are tracking your website and blog traffic. The free and easy way is to use Google Analytics. Knowing exactly how people find your content, how long and which page they stay on are important in understanding what content visitors like the most.
The Places to Share Content
Make sure the the content you’re creating can be shared and is shared on social networks. Definitely add appropriate social sharing buttons to your blog to make it easy for people to share content with friends on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr (and don’t forget about email).
Your brand should be posting your content through your own social networking accounts, so followers can enjoy the content. When posting to social networks use short URLs to track the number of clicks per link. Bit.ly and Google have free URL shorteners. You should also consider investing in a social analytics platform that allows you to track conversions that are influenced by social clicks, schedule posts and run detailed reports. Social media tracking can give you great insights into the type of content that your audience likes and appreciates.
