Small Business vs. Big Business in Socialization

January 25 2010 by ~ 2 Comments

After reading a recent blog post by prominent social media expert Brian Solis it got me to thinking.  Does the size of your business have an impact on how well you can effectively use social media? Do larger or smaller companies have the advantage?

In The Socialization of Small Business Brian Solis discusses a survey that was taken by Ad-ology.  In almost every single category, the people surveyed found social media to be insignificant.  Am I calling these people naive? No, but social media can play a larger role than they perceive.

Social media and a community based network are helping to bridge the customer-company relationship.  Companies such as eWayDirect are leading the way in making customer service, and the simple process of purchasing, a more personal experience.  Companies are now able to cater directly to their customers need, thus providing a more satisfying customer experience.

How many times have your been frustrated by a recent purchase? How many times could you barely understand your customer service representative? How many times a DAY do you receive spam emails or email that isn’t pertinent to your personality or needs?

Larger companies often times lose track of what made them successful in the early days.  Many times big companies are so focused on the bottom line that they neglect the customers actual needs.  Off the top of my head I can only think of one or two companies that provide an enjoyable customer service experience. (Southwest Airlines being one of them).  The moral of the story is, smaller companies are leading the way in social media innovation to better the customer experience. While large companies have the price edge,  are people becoming more willing to spend the extra dollar for an enjoyable experience?

We’d love to year your take on the situation! Who is winning the social media battle in your mind?

Great thoughts here, Erik. I’d like to see more large brands have deeper involvement with social media. But there are some more large brands are doing a good job. These include Dell, Starbucks, Zappos and Comcast, among others. ESPN is also doing a pretty great job, I think.
