Interview with Sukhjit Ghag- Sony

February 24 2010 by ~ 4 Comments

I recently had the chance to talk with Sukhjit Ghag, who works at Sony Electronics and deals with Social Media and the “media behind the media.”  Here’s my interview:

Me: How do you feel social media has changed the way companies do business?

Sukhjit: Social media has created a two-way street, in terms of communication, that hasn’t really existed before. Companies have to pay better attention to what their consumers are saying and feeling in order to really make the most out of social media tools. Some people may consider it a new way to market.. but it’s so much more powerful than that. It’s a way to build community.

Me: Which social media site or platform do you like the most? Why?

Sukhjit: I like twitter because of the immediacy and directness. Plus short burst are good for my attention span! :) I also think video sites are important. Video is an amazing tool. My favorite social media platform of all time was Seemic when it was a video community. That was an incredibly powerful way of communicating with people, having real discussions and making connections. Do you know Seesmic video?

Me: How do companies and people balance participation and engagement with promoting products/discounts on social networking sites?

Sukhjit: There has to be a fair amount of listening before engaging. It’s important to know what your audience thinks and then you can create more relevant experiences.

Me: Despite what some may say, email marketing isn’t dead. How are you using email to reach your customers?

Sukhjit: Email marketing is not dead at all. It’s very important. Social media is a hot topic, but not everyone is on twitter or facebook. Different methods work for different people. Sony has a group that deals with email marketing. It’s their focus.

Me: What do you think the future holds for email marketing? Do social media and email play well together?

Sukhjit: Not sure, but like I said in question 4, both are important.

Me: What are some of the tools and gear that you use to make a successful blog? Software, hardware, etc.

Sukhjit: WordPress is a great platform for blogging. As for video cameras, I’m currently using a handycam and for editing I now use Sony Vegas. Truthfully, I will shoot video with anything I can get my hands on.. meaning, I’ll use my webcam, my cel phone camera… anything that shoots video. I’m forgiving when it comes to quality sometimes because it’s all about capturing a moment.

Me:I have noticed you are a big fan of incorporating video, what tools would you suggest people use in regards to hosting, recording, sharing, and editing video?

Sukhjit: Hmm. This is a good question and I think I kind of answered it in question 6. I should also add that 12seconds.tv is a great site for short video posts. Also, promoting something once you’ve posted is important too, what I mean by that is you shouldn’t forget to let people know via twitter and facebook that you’ve got a new blog post up.

Me: What do you like to do when you’re not working?

Sukhjit: I work a lot. Especially since I am working for such a big company. I also really like blogging, so it’s something I did do in my free time. I love to edit and I enjoy putting a story together via video. When I’m not at my computer I like to practice yoga, walk/hike and discover new neighborhoods in San Diego. I love to cook and go to the farmer’s market. Food is really important to me. I’ve been getting back to reading again, my favorite magazine is Wired and I’m always happy when the new one shows up every month. Oh yes, I also love watching Fringe and Lost and since I got my new television, I’ve enjoyed it even more.

Thank you Erik and eWayDirect for taking the time to interview me. I’m almost 6 months into my job here at Sony, so it’s actually good to have these questions posed to gauge where I’m at and to make sure I stay on track. Hope you got something useful from this… and next time lets to a video interview! :)
