In this first episode, I shared some basic tips on how to monitor what people are saying about you online. Like it or not, people are talking about you and your industry online. Even if you don’t choose to participate, you should at least be monitoring things to see what people are saying.
The first step is to choose some basic keywords to track. Some of these include your company name, products and services, website and key employee names. After you’ve gotten the hang of tracking everything for your own company, you should also look at tracking what people are saying about your competitors.
Next, you need to choose where to track what’s being said. Some sites to check include search.twitter.com, Google News, Google Blogsearch, Boardreader.com, YouTube, Delicious and Backtweets.com
Managing all this stuff can be tricky, but setting up a free dashboard using Netvibes.com is one way to cut down the time it takes to check everything.
Once you have started tracking what people are saying, it’s important to establish a strategy for monitoring and responding. Try to keep a spreadsheet of all mentions and if they are positive, negative or neutral- so you can see how this changes over time. Also, it’s important to establish a policy for responding–what kinds of things to respond to, who should respond, etc.
If you don’t have time to set up a dashboard on Netvibes (trust me, it’s EASY), you can at least use Google Alerts to keep track of company mentions.
