Many different industries are jumping into social media. Companies such as car services, fast food chains, government departments and music artists are all getting involved. This week we took a look at a few unexpected uses of social media we’ve seen recently, in addition to some potential big news from Twitter.

Twitter to Offer Brand Pages like Facebook’s

Twitter is developing a different and new kind of profile page for business accounts, similar to Facebook Pages. Twitter Pages will provide more space for brands to communicate with visitors. Brand advertisers are looking forward to the idea of “breaking free from the constrains of the current platform.” Twitter has taken big risks in creating new advertising products but been slower in rolling out business services. When this feature is available we will definitely write a blog post about it.

Homeland Security to Issue Terror Warning Via Facebook & Twitter

Color coded terror warnings are coming to Facebook and Twitter on April 27. They have changed the system to two levels, “Elevated” and “Imminent.” Warning messages will be issued far and wide but only under certain circumstances for limited time periods. The messages will available on Facebook and Twitter “when appropriate” and there are no clues to how these messages will presented to the public.

I Just Rode In An Uber Car in New York City, And You Can Too

Uber is a service that launched last summer that lets you call a black car service from your mobile phone. All you have to do is add the mobile app, create an account with your credit card and hit a button when you want a car. The car comes to you via GPS and then you are done your credit card is automatically billed. After testing this business model in San Francisco, they have expanded to New York City.

Mobile Ordering Marketing Fast Food Faster

Consumers are rapidly adopting online food ordering because they are finding that ordering ahead of time is easier and more accurate. Some establishments are offering discounts for mobile ordering creating an incentive to skip standing in line for food.  Customers do have an interest in dining-related mobile apps. A survey found that among all mobile app downloaders, 25% used a dining or restaurant app. As of right now not many places have ordering via mobile apps, but that will change soon as more customers catch on.

The Beastie Boys Make Some Noise For Tumblr

Beastie Boys released a track from their upcoming album on Tumblr. In the past, rock bands and music artists released songs early on MySpace or YouTube. But now it’s all about Tumblr. The Beastie Boys official site redirects to Tumblr and even their Facebook page points to the Tumblr post. Rap/hip hop artist/entrepreneur, Jay-Z, just launched his new website using the Tumblr platform. Also the US Department of State started a Tumblr this week.

GameStop Retail Giant Opens a Store on Facebook

This is in line with a few retailers trying to harness business from Facebook fans. GameStop will sell physical games via their Facebook Page that users can receive in the mail or pick up at a local store. This is the first push in a larger strategy for GameStop to stay relevant in the age of digital distribution. It doesn’t want to end up like its friends, Hollywood Video and Tower Records. By 2014, GameStop hopes that its digital game distribution businesses will generate more than $1.5 billion in revenue.
