<p>Last week, Bill McGowan (VP of Sales here at eWayDirect), spoke to at the DMA List and Data Council Meeting about the role of data in the future of marketing.</p>
<p>Understanding how to properly utilize customer data and insights is the key to understanding what your customers want and how to give it to them. Email marketing, social media marketing and search engine marketing metrics enable smart companies to harness the power of data to refine their marketing efforts and build profitable and engaging relationships with their customers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On Monday Jason and I attended the <a href="http://whatsnextdc.com/" target="_blank">What’s Next? DC: Marketing Communication Roadmap</a> conference.  This conference had a different spin then most typical business conferences. There were two ballrooms. One was packed with speakers that focused on case studies and the other was a room for networking, because the conference planners believe the best way to learn is from face-to-face discussions with other smart people. In the networking room, floating experts led discussion on topics like Twitter and Facebook marketing. This was a very different approach to networking and conferences. We at eWayDirect enjoyed it!</p>
<p>Here are some of my takeaways from What&#8217;s Next DC:</p>
<h3>The Future of Shopping, How Offline is the New Online</h3>
<p>By Bryan Eisenberg, Eisenberg Holding</p>
<p>-Almost everyone has a smartphone, people can price compare right in the store. This changes things for retail companies. People have many outlets to buy from.</p>
<p>-Took a look at a really cool app for smartphones call Layar. Check out the video below.</p>
<p>-People are using apps like <a href="http://www.layar.com/" target="_blank">Layar</a>, bar scanning apps like <a href="http://redlaser.com/" target="_blank">Red Laser</a> not just to price compare but to also find reviews and other information about items.</p>
<p>-Since customers have so many choices, companies have to: be about the customer like Amazon, be remarkable like Apple, be authentic like Zappos, be nimble like Best Buy, and be improving like Google.</p>
<h3>Activating Communities of Interest</h3>

<p>-People have always been social, but this the first time that humans have been networked this way (through computers)</p>
<p>-Main point that social media marketing is really just digital marketing in a networked world.</p>
<p>-Since we are now all networked in some way, we trust our network to help us with buying stuff.</p>
<p>-If you look at consumers decision, 1) Discovery Journey: where you consider and evaluate products. Those companies don’t have a lot of control over this part. 2) Loyalty Loop: Buy. Enjoy. Advocate. Bond. That in this step, when people buy a product and write on that company’s Facebook wall, that they love it. Other people are more likely to buy, because some one else said they liked it. Companies have control over this part of consumer decision. It’s important that companies are helping to create and identify networks of people that like their products, so they become brand advocates.</p>
<p>-Identify communities of interest, find the access points, develop a plan &amp; programs.</p>

<p>-Businesses spend 85% of search marketing budgets on PPC but 85% of the clicks are in SEO, not PPC.</p>
<p>-A quarter of Google&#8217;s search terms have never been used before&#8230; People are weird.</p>
<p>-70% of searches are long tail. Focus your content on this portion&#8230; less competition.</p>
<p>-The foundation of SEO is accessible, good-quality content.</p>
<p>-Linking is key for getting great SEO. Make sure to include linkbuilding in your plan.</p>
<p>-Great content does not equal great rankings. SEO is a popularity contest.</p>
