Another Bad Link Request

July 09 2010 by ~ 3 Comments

Wow, I thought we were past the days of irrelevant link requests, considering all the information out there on how bad of an idea it is. I guess there are still some SEOs out there who think this works.

Here’s a link request I got the other day from somebody wanting my fantasy football advice site to link to, guess what? An apartment-share finding service. Check it out (names and website addresses have been replaced to protect “the innocent”:

Message Heading: “I would like to do the link exchange with you”

Hi,

My name is Bad SEO Guy. I recently came across your website [my website address] through a search engine and found it is informative for our website’s visitors.
I would like to exchange link with our websites  [target website 1]and [target website 2].

As you are probably aware, reciprocal linking benefits both of us by raising the search engine rankings and generating more traffic to both of our websites.

If you would like to do the link exchange with us, please place our link on your website with the following details.

Title: [Suggested Title]
Description:
[Suggested Description]

Link: [Suggested URL]

Then, please inform me by replying to this email with your details (title and description) or use the following links to post your details. Your links will be shown once we approve them within a few days.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Bad SEO Guy”

Okay, seriously…what kind of response do you give to a request like this? You can draw your conclusions about what kind of SEO company this business hired to do their work. This is what happens when companies look at SEO as a technical thing that can be handled by just any web developer or company that claims to do SEO. No relevance, bad grammar, and they are giving your company a bad name.

Not worth it, in my humble opinion.

I would ask him exactly how your site is informative to his site's visitors. Will he admit his error? Will he go on a long rant about the mutual benefits of “doing the link exchange”?

    I'm in suspense.

Good link requests represent relationships and is not a place to cut corners with irrelevant link requests (as this company did). Did you respond to this link request? If so, I am curious to know your response.

You guys are really nice for even considering a response. For me, the delete button was not large enough on this email.
