A Week in Review (3/26/10)
March 27 2010 by Tiffany Blosser ~ 0 CommentsYou Can’t Solve Customer Service Complaints through Twitter
Twitter has proven itself to be a successful tool in marketer’s tool belts. The real-time search results and ability to respond instantly have given companies a new way to gain attention with their consumers. Twitter has been argued to be a great customer service tool. This article begs to differ by arguing that customer service complaints can’t be solved through Twitter. Although there are valid reasons given for this stance, it is hard to resolve anything in 140 characters or less, I beg to differ that Twitter isn’t a great tool to alleviate a lot of customer service related issues. Read further for more details and you decide if a sticky customer service situation can be rectified on Twitter.
Alice in the Land of Missed PPC Advertising Opportunity
For as long as the internet and paid search marketing has been around, it’s a wonder why people still think of it as this mystical, fantasy land. The author of this post, Kevin Lee, expands on the notion that top level marketers, specifically in the retail industry, are unaware of the benefits of having a cohesive marketing plan, including online and digital marketing in the overall mix. Too many marketers have their traditional marketing attempts and online marketing efforts separated in silos, and don’t realize that one can benefit the other, and should be thought of as a cohesive plan of action when determining the ROI.
Forget Foursquare: Why Location Marketing Is New Point-of-Purchase
Pretty soon Foursquare and Gowalla will be dominated by every website and service because soon they will all practice location-based marketing. This new trend is called mobile advertising, and is quickly diminishing the remnants of point-of-purchase. The enormous rise in location-based technology has turned the industry on its head. As more and more people have access to location-based technology, either on their smart phones or other electronic devices, more businesses will have the ability to target the exact location of where people are, and then flood then with promotions. This new trend will continue to blur the lines between promotion and advertising.
The Things Brands Should be Doing on Social Media
There are a ton of tips floating around the internet about how to run your social media campaign, but this article mentions some rules that brands should be doing on social media which were new and interesting to me. This blog offers great advice, such as, it’s not what a company does with their content, it is what consumers do with it that matters. Influencers will be a company’s best friend. Visitors who come by way of an influencer are more likely to convert to a loyal fan than visitors that come from another source. Read further in this article to get some great advice on what your brand should be doing in the social media realm.
Is Social Media Going to Ruin Email Marketing?
Hardly. Some people seem to think that the uprising of social media will eliminate the need for email marketing. That is hardly the case. Social media is simply one of many tools in a marketer’s online tool belt. Just like with any other type of medium, social media connects with people differently than email connects with people, the same way television ads connect with people differently than an ad in a magazine. This article explains more in depth the importance of email marketing and what new trends in social media can teach us about the email marketing industry. Bottom line, social media and email marketing are here to stay, and work in harmony with one another.
When You’re Buying Key Words, Don’t Forget the Long Tail
This article offers great advice from an SEO guru about paid search campaigns and how to make them successful. Avinash Kaushik uses his own blog as a model for an effective paid search campaign. His number one tip for PPC purchases is to remember the long tail. Kaushik says “If half of your traffic doesn’t come from search, you’re probably doing something wrong.” For more information and advice, check out this article.
Social Media vs. Email Marketing
Lately this has been the biggest topic for debate. There were articles in the past few weeks that questioned the ability for email marketing to survive with the rise in social media, but this article by Social Media Today confirms that social media will make email marketing stronger, leading to better results when both are combined.
Location is Changing the Face of SEO
Mobile searches and location-based marketing are changing the techniques used for search engine optimization (SEO). New location-based social media such as FourSquare and GoWalla have created a heavier emphasis on location information. Location seems to be the thing with the most relevancy in searches now, so SEO experts are struggling to make website searches more relevant when not using a mobile phone. SEO marketers will have just have to figure out how to adapt to the changing landscape, much like what everyone else in the industry is doing.
